Enderby B.C.'s 'Most Valuable Player'
There's this boy in Enderby British Columbia named Billy A.
He is very passionate about sports, all of them!

He plays soccer for the Salmon Arm Reps
in the summer, when he is not water skiing
or training on the BMX course in Vernon.

Billy has a Suzuki 80 cc dirt bike that he loves
to ride, but in the winter, he rides a ski-doo with
his dad. Yup, he has his own. When he's not on
the snowmobile trail, he's busy on the school
basketball court.

One of his buddies rolls around the bank picking up speed.

"The trick with this sport is," says Billy Senior,
"is to keep both wheels stuck on the ground.
If you get air, you actually loose time".

Air is fun for doing tricks. These kids are
amazing.

 

They are learning very quickly, and their confidence
makes them stronger, according to the club manager.
"It's really good for them, to know they can be great at
something so cool!"

 

The BMX Park in Vernon seems to be a great place to hang
out after school. Everyone is there, including plenty of
parents. There is a handy concession stand and washrooms
as well. The City built this park some 20 years ago!

 

Dozens of teen agers enjoy the training and the racing, and
it is very inexpensive to join up. Here we see the riders on
the starting ramp ready to roll.

Jason, one of the veteran racers, hangs out
here to be with his friends and the sport
he loves. He comes every day after work.
"It's a great place for the kids to come, and
stay out of trouble."

As the readers know, I am new to the Okanagan. I am
very impressed with this BMX operation, and I understand
it is run by volounteers. People who take an interest in
helping youth to get involved in something this cool,
are very special people indeed.

And as for Billy? His dream is to play hockey in the
NHL one day. I have no doubt that this kid will go
right to the top. His teachers also voted him the kid
with the best improved school performance this year.

Every kid out there ought to have a Dad like this.
A father's example is the best influence you can get.
We need more of this good stuff in the world today
... eh??
